Oban is also the birth place of acclaimed writer, Alan Warner, whose five novels are the winners of numerous awards, one of which, Movern Callar, was made into a film in 2002. The film explores the life of Movern, who wakes up one December to find her author boyfriend dead in the kitchen, and how she deals with the event in her Oban portside home. She continues to finish her boyfriend’s unfinished novel and have it published under her own name. Both book and film were highly received by the British public and the film went on to win 3 BAFTAs, and a total of 9 wins out of 14 award nominations!
As well as inspiring artists and writers, Oban has also caught the attention of film directors over the years. Sean Connery has visited the area twice for the filming of James Bond classic; "From Russia with Love" (1963) and "Entrapment" (1999), both of which were huge successes in the box office. In earlier years it was also the setting for the 1971 movie, "To Catch a Spy", a comedy spy film starring Dick Clement.
